Né le 28 juillet 1886 à ROSSVILLE (Tennessee, USA) fils de Sam NORTH (1866- ?) et de Lucy HINES (1870-1930), il aura douze frères et sœurs dont plusieurs morts en bas âge : Cassie, Sam junior, Nettie, Earl, Luther, Julia, Lulu et Estella. Célibataire et sans enfant. Il travaillait comme ouvrier agricole à SOUDAN (Arkansas, USA) où sa famille s’est installée avant 1900. 

Physiquement, il était de grand et carrure moyenne, avec les yeux marrons et cheveux noirs. Il était d’origine afro-américaine et le recensement indique qu’il était mulâtre (métisse).

 

Born on July 28, 1886 in ROSSVILLE (Tennessee, USA) son of Sam NORTH (1866-?) and Lucy HINES (1870-1930), he will have twelve brothers and sisters, several of whom died at a young age: Cassie, Sam junior, Nettie , Earl, Luther, Julia, Lulu and Estella. Single and childless. He worked as an agricultural laborer in SUDAN (Arkansas, USA) where his family settled before 1900.

 Physically, he was tall and of medium build, with brown eyes and black hair. He was of African-American descent and the census indicates that he was mulatto.

Il est inscrit sur les listes de conscription le 5 juin 1917. Il obtiendra le grade de « private » (soldat 2e classe) ainsi que le matricule 3.839.330. Il rejoint le 29 août 1918 le 544e régiment de génie, compagnie C, composé uniquement de soldat d’origine afro-américaine.

 

He is registered on the conscription lists on June 5, 1917. He will obtain the rank of private and the serial number 3,839,330. On August 29, 1918, he joined the 544th Engineer Regiment, Company C, composed only of soldiers of African-American.


Le 22 septembre1918, il embarque à bord du l’USS PRINCESS MATOIKA, anciennement le SS KIAUTSCHOU de la compagnie transatlantique Hambourg-America et SS PRINCESS ALICE de la Norddeutscher Lloyd, à HOBOKEN (New Jersey, USA), direction la France, en compagnie de l’ensemble de son régiment et d’autres unités pour un total de 3.660 personnes à bord.

 

On September 22, 1918, he embarked on board of the USS PRINCESS MATOIKA, formerly the SS KIAUTSCHOU of the transatlantic company Hamburg-America and SS PRINCESS ALICE of the Norddeutscher Lloyd, in HOBOKEN (New Jersey, USA), heading for France, in company of his entire regiment and other units for a total of 3,660 people on board.

Le 544e régiment de génie était rattaché avec la 1ere armée de septembre à novembre 1918 et retourne aux Etats-Unis en juillet 1919.

 

 

The 544th engineer was with the first army from september to november 1918 and returned to USA in july 1919.

Comme beaucoup d’hommes, il est atteint de la grippe espagnole, il est hospitalisé à partir du 27 octobre 1918 et décède officiellement de broncho-pneumonie, le 12 novembre 1918. D’abord enterré à CRAVANT, son corps est exhumé pour être transféré, le 15 juin 1922, à la nécropole de THIAUCOURT-REGNIEVILLE (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France), « Saint Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial ».  Carré A Rangée 26 Tombe 10.

 

Like many men, he was infected with the Spanish flu, hospitalized on October 27, 1918 and officially died of broncho-pneumonia on November 12, 1918. First buried in CRAVANT, his body was exhumed to be transferred , June 15, 1922, at the necropolis of THIAUCOURT-REGNIEVILLE (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France), “Saint Mihiel American Cemetery and Memorial”.
