Il est incorporé au Fort Slocum (New York, USA) le 30 janvier 1918 en tant que « private » (soldat 2e classe) avec le numéro de matricule 703.848 et est assigné à la 336e unité de « Machine Shop Truck » (qui peut être traduit par 336e unité de camion d’atelier). En Novembre 1918, l'unité est renommé "Service Park Unit".

Le 22 mars 1918, il embarque à bord du paquebot transatlantique britannique SS ARAWA, de la White Star Line, à PORTLAND (Maine, USA), direction la France, en compagnie de son unité, du 303e régiment de génie et du 309e régiment d’artillerie pour un total de 676 personnes à bord.

Comme beaucoup d’hommes, il est atteint de la grippe espagnole et décède officiellement de pneumonie, le 13 février 1919, à 22h30, à l’ambulance américaine d’ANCY-LE-FRANC. D'abord enterré au cimetière militaire américain d'ANCY-LE-FRANC, il est transféré à une date inconnue au cimetière communal d'ANCY-LE-FRANC.
Sa tombe se trouve dans l’ancien cimetière (vers l'eglise), à droite de l’entrée et au fond à gauche.
Il est l'unique américain mort durant la première guerre mondiale à reposer dans l'Yonne.
Like many men, he was infected by the Spanish flu and officially died of pneumonia on February 13, 1919, at 10:30 p.m., in the American ambulance in ANCY-LE-FRANC. First buried in the American military cemetery of ANCY-LE-FRANC, he was transferred on an unknown date to the communal cemetery of ANCY-LE-FRANC.
His grave is in the old cemetery (near the church), to the right of the entrance and to the far left.
He is the only American who died during the First World War to rest in Yonne.
L'histoire locale raconte que James flirté avec une femme mariée d'ANCY-LE-FRANC et que le mari le voyant escalader le balcon, le tua d'un coup de fusil de chasse. C'est pour cette raison que son corps ne fut pas exhumé pour une nécropole ou les USA.

The local story tell that James flirted with a married woman from ANCY-LE-FRANC and the husband seeing him climbing the balcony killed him with a shotgun blast. It is for this reason that his body was not exhumed for a necropolis or the USA.

...Après des années de recherches , sur les combats et décès de soldats , il s'avère que cette"pneumonie" était dans la période de la grippe espagnol ,"H1N1 " et qui aujourd'hui ,nous ne savons qu' approximativement le nombre de personnes décédées de cette maladie , dont le Président Woodrow Wilson touché , qui ne c'est jamais bien remis de ce virus ,et qui a fait plus de
50millions de morts sur la planète .
