Procès-verbal de la gendarmerie du 27 septembre 1918

Archives d'Auxerre cote 7 R 183

Cejourd'hui vingt-sept septembre mil neuf cent dix-huit à dix heures.

1) of Mr. MICHOT Charles, 52 years old, mayor: "Yesterday September 26th, around 7 pm, I went to Mrs. Jembfort's home for business, I found at lady's home 3 soldiers who seemed to me suspicious, saying that they were Americans. and who had already asked this lady for tobacco and milk, with their nationality it was made soup, omelette and coffee, and I asked them for their papers, but they were refused and one of them showed me a detached sheet of a calendar containing the map of the department and I told them that I was going to drive them one after the other to the passenger station, While waiting for the arrival of the gendarmerie, one of them took out a revolver from his pocket and fired on the persons present, and reached Mr. MARTIN Edmond with a projectile below the left breast. Assisted by Mr. GUELLON, ROBERT and GREGOIRE, we disarmed this soldier and his two comrades saw this. we escaped and we did not see them again. In this fight, this madman was wounded quite badly. As there is no doctor in the country, I gave him first aid by the inhabitants and I had hospitalized MARTIN immediately in Auxerre. I give you the revolver removed from the hands of the American. "

We went to the wounded man and found him at the station, all bloody and comatose, lying on straw, with a cross wound on the top of the head, 5 to 6 centimeters long. , a second wound behind the head and finally a third on the forehead. - The mayor had it cleaned and transported on a bed. We could not question him because of his condition and not knowing if he spoke French. We noted the following inscriptions on his identification plate : Harry Collier Co .M. 112 inf USA 1249457

2) Mr. GUILLON Narcisse 51 years old, blacksmith and municipal councilor: "Yesterday 26 September at 7 pm, I went to the widow JEMBFORT, my niece, and I found sitting three people saying themselves American soldiers, as they seemed suspicious, I asked them if they had any papers to present to me, they refused and showed me only a detached sheet of a calendar where there was the map of the department and that when the mayor arrived a moment later, he also asked them for their papers but they also refused to present them to him, and I must add that I was acting as a municipal councilor in the absence of the mayor. The soldiers then sat down to eat a soup and an omelette that had been prepared for them and drank a coffee. They finished their meal and asked where they were going to sleep, stamping their feet and saying, "Kilometers, kilometers , Avallon " At the announcement made by the mayor that they were going to sleep at the post, while waiting for the arrival of the gendarmerie, one of them out of his pocket a revolver and leaned the barrel on his chest. From my left hand I grabbed his wrist and was able to deflect the weapon. The bullet went to reach my servant MARTIN Edmond. I then beat the soldier with blows and withdrew the revolver from his hands. The other two fled without anyone touching them, abandoning their caps. In this fight, I was wounded in the right hand by a blow of tooth "

3) Mr. ROBERT Julien, 55 years old, rural policeman: "Last night, around 7 pm, having been informed that there were foreigners at Mrs. widow JEMBFORT, I went there immediately to make sure When I arrived I found Mr. Mayor and several other people asking for their papers, but they refused to present them, and the mayor told them he was going to take them to the police station. While waiting for the arrival of the gendarmerie, one of them pulled out of his pocket a revolver and fired on us, wounding MARTIN on the left side.We threw ourselves on this individual to disarm him and lead him to the post. In the meantime, the other two fled, and I was wounded in the fight with my right hand. "

4) of Mr. NICOLE Stanislas, 46, coffee maker: "I have just learned right now by my son Adonis, that while going to manure dung, he had found an American soldier lying on the ground. therefore, I went to realize this and I have just seen that one of the three American author of the scene that took place last night is lying on the ground, giving no sign of life "

On receipt of this statement, we went to the scene about 400 meters from the village and found that an American soldier was lying on the right side, the right hand lying near the head, the left hand along the body , his pants down to his knees, his shirt up to the navel. The front of the shirt was stained with blood, we raised it and found that it wore a wound, seemed made by bullet from where the blood had escaped; a towel was wrapped around the wound, near him were piles of excrement appearing to have been made by him, he still had some at the base. He was dressed in a dark khaki American military suit with similarly colored quilted bands and shod in boots, bareheaded. This corpse was cold but not rigid. This observing was completed, we notified the prosecution and the borough commander and continued our investigation.

By entering, I saw GUELLON holding the soldier who is on the run and who was preparing to defend his comrade that the country guard kept on the ground. At that moment I threw my liter which was broken by the shock on the head of this soldier what must have wounded him on the forehead, then he ran away, I started after him, and when I reached the garden, I caught him, but he kicked me in the stomach, which made me letting go a second time, he punched me on the left arm making me let go again water, then he ran away without me joining him. From my niece's shouting, I can not tell you whether there were any more shots fired and how the one just found near the country was killed. The one who is on the run and I would have injured his head went to Usselot this morning. "

When GUELLON arrived and asked to see their papers, they refused and the mayor told them that he was going to take them to bed at the station, while waiting for the arrival of the gendarmerie, one of them took out a revolver and fired at the people who were present, and I can not tell you what happened afterwards. embarrassed by the emotion that it produced to me.
