Physiquement, il était de taille et carrure moyenne, avec les yeux bleus et cheveux marrons.
Born on September 29, 1892, in Washington, D.C., to William Hamilton Bayly (1850–1907) and Mary Kuhns (1858–1948), he remained an only child. He was unmarried and had no children.
Physically, he was of average height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair.
Il était étudiant depuis mai 1917 au Fort Myer, camp d’entraînement avant d’être transférer en août comme sous-lieutenant au Camp Lee (Virginie, USA). Il est ensuite assigné au personnel général. En avril 1918 il est promu au grade de lieutenant et le mois suivant rattaché à la 80e division pour son départ en France.
He was a student at Fort Myer, a training camp, since May 1917 before being transferred in August as a second lieutenant to Camp Lee (Virginia, USA). He was then assigned to general staff. In April 1918, he was promoted to lieutenant and the following month was attached to the 80th Division for his departure to France.
Le 22 mai 1918, il embarque à bord de l’USS LEVIATHAN à HOBOKEN (New Jersey, USA), direction la France, en compagnie de l’état-major de la 80e division, du 131e régiment d’infanterie et d’autres unités pour un total de 10.583 personnes à bord.
On May 22, 1918, he boarded the USS LEVIATHAN in HOBOKEN (New Jersey, USA), toward France, along with the staff of the 80th Division, the 131st Infantry Regiment, and other units, for a total of 10,583 people on board.
La division fut envoyée en Europe en juin 1918 et participe à la bataille de la Somme au côté des anglais vers la ville de DOULLENS (Somme, France) jusqu'à la fin août où elle se rend en Meuse pour l'offensive Meuse-Argonne. La division fut la seule à participer à chaque phase de l'offensive. Après l'armistice et plus précisément après Thanksgiving, elle fut envoyée à la 15e zone d'entrainement dont le point central est ANCY-LE-FRANC (Yonne, France)
The division was sent to Europe in June 1918, and took part in the Battle of the Somme alongside the British near the town of DOULLENS (Somme, France) until the end of August, when the division went to the Meuse for the Meuse-Argonne offensive. The division was the only one to take part in every phase of the offensive. After the armistice, and more specifically after Thanksgiving, the division was sent to the 15th training zone, with ANCY-LE-FRANC (Yonne, France) as its base.
Comme beaucoup d’hommes, il est atteint de la grippe espagnole et décède officiellement de la tuberculose miliaire, le 3 janvier 1919. D’abord enterré à ANCY-LE-FRANC, son corps est exhumé pour être transféré, le 3 février 1922, à la nécropole de SURESNES (Ile-de-France, France), « Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial » Carré B, Rangé 14, tombe 30. Il dispose) également d’une épitaphe à WASHINGTON D.C (USA) au cimetière « Rock Creek Cemetery », sur la tombe de ses parents.
Like many men, he contracted Spanish flu and officially died of miliary tuberculosis on January 3, 1919. First buried in ANCY-LE-FRANC, his body was exhumed and transferred on February 3, 1922, to SURESNES (Ile-de-France, France), “Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial” Square B, Row 14, Grave 30. He also has an epitaph in Washington, D.C. (USA) at Rock Creek Cemetery, on his parents' grave.

Quelques dizaines de jours après le décès de son fils, elle renomme une organisation "Louis Hamilton Bayly fund" afin de lui rendre hommage.
En octobre 1919, elle fit don au département central du Y.M.C.A. des livres, curiosités, etc. ayant appartenu à son fils.
En mars 1920, Mary fut cité pour des services exceptionnellement méritant et remarquables auprès de la 80e division en France, par le Général John J. Pershing.
Une coupure de presse la montre également, en 1928 avec le président des Etats-Unis d'Amérique, Calvin Coolidge, en train de lui remettre un "buddy poppy" (coquelicot artificiel) réalisé par des vétérans dans les hôpitaux. Elle lui remit également un vrai coquelicot, pris du Bois Belleau.

In October 1919 she donated to the Central Department of Y.M.C.A. books, curiosities, etc. having belonged to his son.
In March 1920, Mary was cited for exceptionally meritorious and outstanding service to the 80th Division in France by General John J. Pershing.
A cutting press also shows her, in 1928 with the President of the United States of America, Calvin Coolidge, giving him a "buddy poppy" (artificial poppy) made by veterans in hospitals. She also gave him a real poppy, taken from Bois Belleau.
